Someone important said it. That still is not evidence.

Wrong: “A Nobel laureate said so.”

Right: “What’s the evidence they’re relying on?”

Prizes aren’t transferable. A physicist’s nutrition opinion is just an opinion.

Expertise is a reason to take a claim seriously, not a reason to stop checking it. The fallacy is treating the credential as the argument.

The legitimate version: deferring to genuine expertise, in the relevant field, where there’s consensus, is how anyone functions. You are not going to personally verify the boiling point of nitrogen. The line is whether the authority is in the right field and whether they’re reporting evidence or just an opinion.
